Brain games” are a very popular class of the so-called casual gaming category of video games, but a recent UK Broadcasting Corporation study suggests that they do not improve cognitive abilities at all . It was only a six-week study, but well over 8000 eighteen to sixty year-olds were involved. Players played these brain games for no less than ten mins a day and 3 days each week, but researchers couldn’t find any statistically major difference between this group and a control group of virtually three thousand that only surfed the web.

These findings counter those of others that had advised an enhancement in memory among older game-players. Most psychologists , however, caution that memory as a cognitive function is very situation-specific, meaning that fungability or the cross-applicability is low. For instance, playing a video gaming classic like Tetris or Pacman will enhance your memory for tasks specific to those titles and not always transfer over to others. It’s simply imaginable how improbable it is that video gaming performance should transpose into increased ability in something not related to gaming!

Confusing the problem further , however , is the chance that some brain games are much better than others and more helpful, whether or not only a little so. The U. Psychologists and cognitive scientists have long suggested activities such as learning a new language or picking up a new sport for something that would truly challenge our intellectual abilities. Learning a new language is obviously mentally stimulating, but research now proves that new neuron connections are formed by powerful activity no matter what our age.
